The Background Check & Verification Officer will be responsible for conducting accurate, timely, and confidential background screening and verification activities for candidates and clients. The role will support the delivery of reliable employment, education, reference, and other verification services while ensuring that all screening activities are conducted in accordance with established processes, client requirements, confidentiality standards, and applicable legal and compliance requirements.
* Conduct comprehensive employment, educational, professional, reference, and other background verification checks.
* Contact relevant institutions, employers, referees, and other authorised sources to validate information provided by candidates.
* Review, validate, and analyse information obtained during background screening exercises.
* Prepare accurate and well-structured background screening and verification reports.
* Maintain complete and accurate records of verification activities, findings, and supporting documentation.
* Ensure all verification processes are conducted in accordance with established company procedures, client requirements, confidentiality standards, and applicable regulations.
* Identify discrepancies, inconsistencies, or red flags during verification and escalate them appropriately.
* Follow up promptly on outstanding verification requests to ensure timely completion of assignments.
* Liaise professionally with candidates, clients, institutions, employers, referees, and other stakeholders when required.
* Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive candidate and client information.
* Support client engagement and service delivery by responding promptly and professionally to verification-related enquiries.
* Monitor assigned verification cases and ensure agreed turnaround times and service-level expectations are met.
* Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to the continuous improvement of background screening processes.
* Prepare periodic reports and updates on verification activities, outstanding cases, completed checks, and identified issues.
* Minimum qualification: HND or Bachelor’s degree (BSc) or equivalent qualification.
* Minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience in background verification, background screening, compliance, HR operations, recruitment, or a related field.
* Strong understanding of employment, educational, reference, and other forms of background verification.
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies or discrepancies in information.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Good research, investigation, documentation, and report-writing abilities.
* Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
* Strong interpersonal and stakeholder-management skills.
* Good organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple verification cases simultaneously.
* Ability to work effectively within defined processes, timelines, and service-level requirements.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and general digital tools.
* Experience in client engagement, customer service, sales support, or HR services will be an added advantage.
* Knowledge of relevant data protection, privacy, compliance, and employment-related requirements will be an advantage.
* Candidates must demonstrate a high level of accuracy, professionalism, reliability, and ethical conduct.
